Jordan Worth banned Alex Skeel from their bed, kept food from him, decided what clothes he could wear, isolated him from friends and family and even took over his Facebook account. He had been scalded with boiling water and stabbed when police found him, a BBC documentary to be shown on television tomorrow revealed.

When she was jailed in 2018 she was the first woman in the UK to be convicted of coercive and controlling behaviour. Documentary ‘Abused By My Girlfriend’ tells the story of Alex, 23, from Bedford, who survived the violent and abusive relationship with his girlfriend. It also features features the work of Bedfordshire Police as they investigated the case. Alex’s case was described by the force as one of the most extreme cases of domestic violence ever dealt with. In the film, Alex tells what he endured at the hands of his girlfriend who he had met at college when they were both 16. His family and friends also share stories of seeing him pulled away from them, powerless to stop what was happening and unaware of how bad the situation would become. Doctors who examined Alex after Worth’s arrest saw the toll that sustained multiple physical injuries and non-physical and psychological harm had taken on him. He was told he was just days away from death.

Alex said: ‘I believe the reason I survived to tell the tale is to help others in a similar situation. ‘I stood up at the time to tell my story, to highlight that domestic abuse happens to guys as well. I am so happy that the BBC has now chosen to commission this film and to give such a public platform for the subject.

I don’t want one more person to suffer what I’ve gone through. ‘Help is available, you will be believed.’ In April 2018, Worth was jailed for seven and a half years at Luton crown court after she pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and coercive and controlling behaviour; the first female in the UK to be convicted of such behaviour. The court was told there were two sides to Jordan Worth. She came from a loving and supportive family and at school had been a high performer, gymnast and coach.

At the University of Hertfordshire she gained a 2:1 Honours Degree in Fine Arts and wanted to become a teacher. She had been involved in caring and voluntary work for unwanted animals and had raised money children in Africa. But at their home in the village of Stewartby in Bedfordshire, Worth cruelly controlled every aspect of her partner’s life.

Neighbours of the couple often heard them arguing said prosecutor Maryam Syed – and the sounds of things being thrown in the house. She said the victim was heard by his neighbours shouting at Worth: ‘Get off me, you are hurting me’. He was seen on occasions with black eyes and to be limping and with his arm in sling. Once Worth was seen at window by a neighbour ‘armed’ with a screwdriver or hammer, the court was told. The court heard it was in June of 2017 that neighbours called police to the couple’s home in the village in the early hours after hearing shouting. The ambulance crew noted injuries to his hand, burns to arms and legs which were being self treated with cling film.
